This chapter serves as an introduction to the book, outlining the general considerations in the measurement of net primary production (NPP) in particular biomes or groups of biomes (e.g. savannas, grasslands and forests), the temporal and spatial variation and principles of site selection, field sampling and laboratory procedures for NPP measurement, and statistical analysis and quality assurance/quality control.
